From Neanderthal shelter to British stronghold to booming modern economy

Neanderthal Inhabitants

Gorham's Cave sheltered some of the last Neanderthals on Earth for over 100,000 years. In 2016 this remarkable cave complex became a UNESCO World Heritage Site, preserving 39,000-year-old rock engravings that rewrote what we know about Neanderthal intelligence.

711 AD

Moorish Conquest

Umayyad general Tariq ibn Ziyad crossed the strait with 7,000 Berber warriors to launch the Islamic conquest of Iberia. He named the Rock "Jebel Tariq" (Tariq's Mountain), giving Gibraltar its name and changing the course of European history for eight centuries.

1160

Moorish Castle Built

The Almohad Caliph Abu Yaqub Yusuf I ordered construction of a mighty fortress atop the Rock. The Tower of Homage, its most iconic structure, still dominates Gibraltar's skyline and remains one of the best-preserved Moorish military buildings in Europe.

1462

Spanish Conquest

After 750 years of Moorish rule, the Duke of Medina Sidonia captured Gibraltar for Castile on behalf of King Henry IV. The Rock changed hands for the first time since the Islamic conquest, beginning 242 years of Spanish sovereignty.

1704

British Capture

During the War of Spanish Succession, an Anglo-Dutch fleet of 61 ships under Admiral Sir George Rooke bombarded Gibraltar for six hours before marines stormed the Rock. Spain would never recover it, reshaping Mediterranean power for the next three centuries.

1713

Treaty of Utrecht

Under Article X of the Treaty of Utrecht, Spain formally ceded Gibraltar to Britain "in perpetuity." Over 300 years later, this treaty remains the legal cornerstone of British sovereignty and one of the longest-standing territorial agreements in European history.

1779-1783

The Great Siege

A combined Spanish and French force of 40,000 besieged Gibraltar's 5,000-strong garrison for three years and seven months. The British held firm, carving the famous Great Siege Tunnels through solid limestone in one of the longest sieges in British military history.

1939-1945

WWII Fortress

The entire civilian population of 16,700 was evacuated to London, Madeira, and Jamaica. Royal Engineers carved 34 miles of tunnels inside the Rock, housing a garrison of 16,000 troops. Gibraltar controlled the western Mediterranean and proved crucial to Operation Torch.

1969

Self-Governance

Dictator Franco closed the land border with Spain, cutting families and communities in two overnight. In response, Gibraltarians adopted their own constitution and formed a self-governing parliament. National Day on 10 September commemorates the sovereignty referendum.

1985

Border Reopens

After 16 years of isolation, the Spain-Gibraltar frontier finally reopened, reuniting families separated since 1969. Full vehicular access was restored, marking the end of one of the longest border closures in Western European history.

2002

Sovereignty Referendum

In a landmark vote, 98.5% of Gibraltarians rejected a proposal to share sovereignty with Spain on a turnout of 87.9%. One of the most decisive referendum results in democratic history, it cemented Gibraltar's unwavering identity as a self-governing British territory.

2025

Schengen Agreement

A historic UK-EU-Gibraltar treaty was signed to remove the hard border with Spain, bringing Gibraltar into the Schengen area under a unique arrangement. Pending ratification, this deal would transform daily life for 15,000 cross-border workers and open a new chapter.
