About Moorish Castle
The Moorish Castle is a medieval fortification originally built in 711 CE during the Umayyad conquest of Iberia, with major reconstruction in the 14th century under the Marinid dynasty. The Tower of Homage - a massive square keep visible from across the bay - is one of the tallest Islamic structures of its kind in Europe. The castle complex also includes the Gate House, portions of the original walls, and a Qanat (underground water channel). It stands as a powerful reminder of Gibraltar's 750 years under Moorish rule.
