About Mediterranean Steps
The Mediterranean Steps is a spectacular hiking trail originally constructed by the British military in the 18th century as a communication route along the eastern cliffs of the Rock. The steep path runs from Jews' Gate at the southern end of the reserve up to O'Hara's Battery at the summit, covering roughly 1.5 km with dramatic views over the Mediterranean, the Strait of Gibraltar, and the coast of North Africa. The route passes through pristine maquis scrubland teeming with wildflowers, migratory birds, and Barbary partridges.
