About Apes' Den
The Apes' Den is one of Gibraltar's most iconic landmarks, home to troops of Barbary macaques - the only wild monkey population in Europe. Around 230 macaques live on the Rock, and the Apes' Den at the middle Cable Car station is one of the best spots to observe them up close. Legend holds that as long as the macaques remain on the Rock, Gibraltar will stay under British sovereignty.
Visitor Tips
Never feed the macaques - it is illegal and carries a fine of up to 4,000 GBP.
Keep bags zipped and food hidden; the monkeys are skilled opportunists.
Do not make direct eye contact or show teeth, as macaques perceive this as a threat.
Best seen in the early morning when they are most active.
