One of the most unusual sights in the world: Gibraltar's main road, Winston Churchill Avenue, crosses directly over the airport runway. Traffic - both vehicles and pedestrians - is stopped by barriers and traffic lights whenever a plane takes off or lands, in much the same way as a railway level crossing. This surreal spectacle is unique in commercial aviation and is one of Gibraltar's most photographed oddities. The crossing is a necessary route for anyone travelling between the border with Spain and the town centre.
