Gibraltar's position at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula, where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediterranean Sea, gives it a Mediterranean climate characterised by hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. With over 300 days of sunshine per year, Gibraltar is one of the sunniest locations in Europe. But the territory's unique geography also creates some distinctive weather phenomena.

Climate Overview

Gibraltar's climate is classified as Csa under the Koppen system - a hot-summer Mediterranean climate. Key characteristics include:

  • Average annual temperature: 18.5°C (65.3°F)
  • Warmest month: August, with average highs of 28-30°C (82-86°F)
  • Coolest month: January, with average highs of 15-16°C (59-61°F) and lows around 10°C (50°F)
  • Annual rainfall: Approximately 750-800 mm (29-31 inches), concentrated between October and March
  • Driest months: June, July, and August, which receive virtually no rainfall
  • Sea temperature: Ranges from 15°C (59°F) in February to 23°C (73°F) in August

Month-by-Month Guide

January & February

The coolest months, with daytime highs of 15-16°C and occasional rainfall. Nights can drop to 8-10°C. These months see the most rain but also plenty of sunny days between showers. Tourist numbers are low, making it a peaceful time to explore without crowds.

March & April

Spring arrives with warming temperatures (17-20°C) and increasing sunshine. March can still see rain, but April is noticeably drier and sunnier. This is one of the best times for birdwatching, as migratory species cross the Strait of Gibraltar - one of Europe's most important bird migration routes.

May & June

Excellent months to visit. Temperatures climb to 22-26°C, rainfall drops significantly, and the days are long and sunny. The sea begins to warm up for swimming. Tourist numbers start to increase but have not yet reached summer peaks.

July & August

The hottest months, with temperatures regularly reaching 28-32°C and virtually no rainfall. Humidity can be higher than expected due to the marine influence. These are the busiest months for tourism. The Levanter cloud (see below) is most common during this period. Sea temperatures peak at 22-23°C.

September & October

September is often considered the best month to visit Gibraltar. Temperatures remain warm (24-27°C in September, 21-23°C in October), the sea is at its warmest, and summer crowds have thinned. October sees the return of some rainfall, but there are still many sunny days.

November & December

Autumn transitions to winter, with temperatures cooling to 16-18°C. Rainfall increases, particularly in November, which is typically the wettest month. December is mild by northern European standards, and Gibraltar's Christmas celebrations bring festive cheer to Main Street and Casemates Square.

The Levanter Cloud

One of Gibraltar's most distinctive weather phenomena is the Levanter - a banner cloud that forms over the summit of the Rock when moist easterly winds from the Mediterranean are forced upward by the Rock's mass. The Levanter can appear dramatically, wrapping the top of the Rock in cloud while the rest of Gibraltar remains sunny. It is most common in summer and can be accompanied by increased humidity and light drizzle on the upper Rock, even when the town below is clear and dry.

Wind Patterns

Gibraltar's weather is influenced by two dominant wind patterns:

  • Levante (Easterly): Warm, moist wind from the Mediterranean. Causes humidity, the Levanter cloud, and can make the temperature feel warmer. Most common in summer.
  • Poniente (Westerly): Cooler, drier wind from the Atlantic. Generally brings clearer skies and more pleasant conditions. More common in winter and spring.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Gibraltar depends on your priorities:

  • For warm weather and beaches: June to September
  • For sightseeing without crowds: April-May or September-October
  • For birdwatching: March-April (spring migration) or September-October (autumn migration)
  • For lower prices: November to March (off-season)

What to Pack

In summer, bring lightweight clothing, sunscreen, a hat, and comfortable walking shoes for exploring the Rock. A light layer is useful for evenings. In winter, a waterproof jacket and layers are advisable, though heavy winter coats are rarely necessary. Year-round, comfortable walking shoes with good grip are essential if you plan to hike the Upper Rock or Mediterranean Steps.
