Gibraltar sits at the tip of the Iberian Peninsula, accessible by land from Spain and by air from across Europe. But it is a British Overseas Territory with its own border controls, its own stamps, and its own rules. Getting the entry requirements wrong can genuinely hold you up at the crossing. Here is everything you need to know before you visit.

Quick Summary

  • Most visitors need a valid passport to enter Gibraltar. National ID cards are not accepted since Brexit.
  • No visa required for British, EU/EEA, US, Canadian, Australian and most other Western visitors.
  • Gibraltar has its own border controls, separate from the UK and Spain.
  • The April 2026 treaty is changing how EU citizens move between Gibraltar and Spain, but passport requirements at the airport remain in place.
  • Gibraltar stamps your passport separately from the UK. If travelling onward to Spain, Schengen rules still apply.

Do You Need a Passport for Gibraltar?

Yes. A valid passport is required for entry into Gibraltar for almost all visitors. This was not always the case. Before Brexit, EU citizens could enter using just their national identity card. Since January 2021, that has changed. Gibraltar left the EU alongside the UK, and the Schengen Agreement does not apply here.

There is one exception: British citizens can enter Gibraltar using a valid British passport or a valid British national identity card if they hold one. For everyone else, a full passport is required.

Who Can Enter Gibraltar Without a Visa?

Gibraltar maintains its own immigration rules but broadly follows UK bilateral visa-free arrangements. The following nationalities can visit without a visa:

  • UK citizens (including Gibraltar-born British nationals)
  • EU and EEA citizens (all 27 EU member states plus Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein)
  • Swiss citizens
  • US, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand citizens
  • Most other Commonwealth and Western nations

If you are unsure whether your nationality requires a visa, check with the Gibraltar Government or your nearest British diplomatic mission before travelling. Getting turned away at the border is not how anyone wants to start a trip.

How long can you stay?

Visa-free visitors can typically stay in Gibraltar for up to 6 months on any single visit, subject to immigration officer discretion. If you plan to work in Gibraltar, you need a work permit regardless of how long you stay or which nationality you hold.

Entry by Land: The La Verja Border Crossing

The main point of entry from Spain is the land border at La Verja, the frontier crossing between La Linea de la Concepcion and Gibraltar. This is one of the busiest land borders in Europe, with around 15,000 people crossing daily. Most are frontier workers who live in Spain and work in Gibraltar.

Until recently, the crossing involved passport checks in both directions. Spanish border police checked on the Spanish side, Gibraltar Border Force checked on the Gibraltar side. The April 2026 treaty is changing this significantly.

What the April 2026 Treaty Changes at the Land Border

Under the new UK-EU Gibraltar Treaty, Gibraltar is entering a modified arrangement that integrates the territory into the Schengen area for border management purposes. In practice:

  • EU Schengen citizens can move freely between Spain and Gibraltar without passport checks at the land border
  • Schengen area controls shift to Gibraltar airport and the port, which become the external Schengen border
  • Non-Schengen visitors (including UK citizens post-Brexit) still go through border controls when entering from Spain

This is a significant shift for the thousands of Spanish nationals and other EU citizens who cross daily for work. The practical implementation is still bedding in at time of writing, so if you are travelling in mid-2026, allow extra time at the crossing.

Entry by Air: Gibraltar International Airport

Gibraltar International Airport is unlike any other airport in the world. The single runway crosses Winston Churchill Avenue, the main road between Spain and Gibraltar. The road closes whenever a flight takes off or lands. You can stand on the pavement and watch the planes roll past.

Entry requirements at the airport are the same as any international crossing: valid passport, no visa required for eligible nationalities. With the treaty, the airport now functions as an external Schengen border:

  • Flights from within the Schengen area go through Schengen-style entry procedures
  • Flights from outside Schengen (UK, US, long-haul) go through standard border controls
  • All passengers still need a valid passport regardless of origin

Entry by Sea

Cruise ships and occasional ferry services arrive at Gibraltar port. Passport requirements apply to all sea arrivals. Cruise passengers typically go through a group passport check on board before disembarking. If you are arriving independently by private vessel or yacht, you will need to clear customs and immigration at the port.

Passport Validity Requirements

Gibraltar does not publish a specific minimum passport validity requirement the way some countries do. As a general rule, your passport should be valid for the entirety of your planned stay. For visitors also subject to Schengen entry rules when travelling through Spain, Schengen requires at least 3 months validity beyond your intended departure date from the Schengen area.

UK passports issued after Brexit show nationality as British Citizen without EU endorsement. This is fine for Gibraltar entry. What matters is that the passport is valid and in date.

Gibraltar Passport Stamps

Gibraltar issues its own entry and exit stamps, separate from UK stamps and Schengen stamps. Many travellers collect them specifically because they are relatively rare. If you do not want a stamp (your passport is nearly full, for example), you can ask Border Force officers not to stamp it, though this is at their discretion.

Travelling onward to Spain after Gibraltar?

If you cross back into Spain, Spanish border control may ask to see your passport depending on your nationality. Non-EU, non-UK passport holders should allow extra time at the crossing and have documents ready.

Children and Minors

All children, including infants, need their own valid passport. A child cannot travel on a parent or guardian passport. This catches out more families than you would expect. If a child is travelling with only one parent or with someone who is not their parent, carrying a signed letter of consent from the absent parent is sensible, as Gibraltar Border Force can request it.

The Bottom Line

Getting into Gibraltar is straightforward for the vast majority of visitors: bring a valid passport, verify your nationality is on the visa-free list, and allow a few minutes at the border. The April 2026 treaty is a genuine change for EU citizens moving between Gibraltar and Spain, but for everyone else the fundamentals are unchanged. Passport in, enjoy the Rock, stamp out.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I enter Gibraltar with just a national ID card?

No. Since Brexit in January 2021, EU citizens can no longer enter Gibraltar using a national identity card. A full valid passport is required for all visitors, with the exception of British citizens who may use a valid British national identity card.

Do I need a visa to visit Gibraltar?

Most Western nationalities, including all EU citizens, US, Canadian, Australian and New Zealand passport holders, can visit Gibraltar visa-free. If unsure, check with the Gibraltar Government or your nearest British diplomatic mission before travelling.

Does the Gibraltar EU treaty mean EU citizens no longer need passports at the land border?

For EU Schengen citizens, the April 2026 treaty means the land border with Spain operates more like an internal Schengen border, with no routine passport checks. However, carrying your passport is still strongly recommended as the new system beds in throughout 2026.

Can I visit Gibraltar on a day trip from Spain?

Yes. Thousands of people visit Gibraltar as a day trip from the Costa del Sol, Marbella or La Linea every week. You will need your passport for the border crossing. Most day visitors spend between three and six hours on the Rock.

Does Gibraltar stamp my passport?

Yes. Gibraltar issues its own entry and exit stamps, separate from UK stamps and Schengen stamps. You can request not to be stamped, at the Border Force officer's discretion.

How long can I stay in Gibraltar without a visa?

Visa-free visitors can generally stay for up to 6 months. If you intend to work in Gibraltar, a work permit is required regardless of nationality. Overstaying your permitted period is treated as an immigration offence.
